Audra McDonald in Concert

His latest is the 2018 “Voice.” Rush was not the prolific songwriter back then, more of a song interpreter so his star never rose as high as Dylan’s or Ochs’. He also carried less of the “angry man” folk protester pose than many of his contemporaries did. As other, competing movie venues were built in and around Barre, the opera house fell out of favor and closed its doors in January 1944, remaining vacant for nearly 40 years. As The Times first reported in November, and as Fisher himself confirmed as recently as last month, he is seeking to sell a share of ownership to outside investors for $500 million. He would then use the proceeds to help pay for the new Las Vegas ballpark. Uncertainty around the public funding could spook potential investors. However, the referendum becomes a little more of a long shot with each passing day. The A’s and their allies have objected to the proposed language of the referendum petition, and the matter remains unresolved after seven months in the Nevada courts.

But, as they say, nothing is official until the shovels hit the ground. The A’s do not claim to be expert defenders of the Nevada Constitution, but they would like their money in a timely manner. That money could be reduced or eliminated if the court were to rule against the state. That money also could be put on hold should the court grant an injunction until the case is decided, or if the losing party appeals. Every facet from the building’s structure and engineering to its interior design—lighting fixtures, carpeting, typography, restaurant china and flatware—was designed by the firm for a unified and integrated look.

On the horizon are stage rigging improvements and the replacement of orchestra section seating in rich burgundy to complete the color scheme throughout the theater. For a decade after its reopening, the opera house underwent a series of incremental upgrades which added curtains, stage lights and a working heating system. In 1993, funds were raised for a massive renovation which added an elevator and balcony seating.

This Celebration Series concert recreates the sound of a bygone era by a band and singers who are some of the best at reliving the excitement of this time. More than 23,000 people visit the Barre Opera House annually, attending performing arts rehearsals and events, public forums, corporate and private functions and community meetings. We serve a broad range of ages, and our attendees travel from all over the state and beyond to attend (and perform in) our events. We host summer theater camps and student matinees, where busloads of school children are brought in to experience live performing arts first-hand.

Good performances, but.....

2008 saw the installation of a brass railing around the perimeter of the orchestra pit, and the replacement of the brass rails in the opera boxes that went missing during the theater’s period of disuse. In 2010, we sound-proofed the theater from the busy downtown street noise by adding interior storm windows. We’re currently illuminating the beautiful balcony stained glass window to make it visible from the outside of the building.

Balcony seating was also added, raising our seating capacity by about a third to 645. The Barre Opera House is fully handicap accessible, except for our balcony. The Barre Opera House entrance is at the rear of the City Hall building, and is wheelchair accessible. The elevator can take patrons to the lobby/orchestra/stage and dressing rooms (but not the balcony). We have five wheelchair spaces and a 10 seat row for handicapped patrons and their companions located in an area that is closest to the lobby doors. “Shadows of the ’60s,” performing the music of Motown supergroups takes the stage at the Barre Opera House at 8 p.m.

After the original Barre City Hall/Barre Opera House building, built only twelve years before, was destroyed by fire in 1898, the current building was erected on the same site. The new Opera House, considered the finest in Vermont, seated 1,000 patrons and opened on August 23, 1899. With significant community support, a dilapidated Barre Opera House re-opened in October 1982. The facility was in an advanced state of disrepair; windows were broken, few seats were left, and the outdated heating system did not function.

A Nevada teachers’ union announced two challenges to the public funding, pursuing a referendum that would let voters decide and filing a lawsuit alleging the bill was unconstitutional. The band’s show is a highly interactive and visually stunning production, following the Motown hit machine of the 1960s and 1970s. While the performers may not be household names, they are top industry musicians and singers. Their costumes, exquisitely designed for this production, show off their Motown cred, as does their dazzling choreography. Through Rush’s long career his mellow New Hampshire-inflected baritone has not suffered the ravages of time but only gotten better.

Since then, the Barre Opera House has continued its work towards complete restoration and renovation. One year it was the installation of a heating system, the next came theater chairs on the main floor. Curtains, stage lights and other amenities were gradually added as the community contributed the time, talents and financial resources necessary. Increased usage and attendance led to our most major capital construction project completed in 1993. This community-funded, million dollar project included the installation of an elevator, making the box office, lobby, stage and dressing rooms handicap accessible to.

This was proven on “What I Know,” his first new studio album, which appeared in 2009. After a 35-year hiatus we heard a Rush whose voice had not diminished considering the wear and tear one might expect from so many performances over such a long period of time. Also, the material was anything but post-retirement geriatric musing. Unlike Dylan, whose voice now sounds cranky as well as creaky, Rush sounds like he could be an up and coming alt country crooner. While Rush may not have written hundreds of oft-recorded songs like his contemporaries Dylan or Joni Mitchell his impact on the American music scene has been profound.

Rush is accompanied on guitar and piano by Matt Nakoa, a Berklee College of Music graduate. He has two albums to his credit, has won a songwriting award from the Kerrville Folk Festival, and has scored music for Disney Productions. He tours regularly on his own, and has been Rush’s regular accompanist recently. Rush is known for his distinctive guitar style, wry humor and warm, expressive voice. His shows are famously filled with rib-aching laughter, his ability to tell terrific stories, and the sweet melancholy ballads he sings along with his passion for gritty blues numbers. The ongoing mission to restore and operate this historic facility is only possible through the continued support of our community.

It was built to replace the Barre City Hall/Opera House which burned down in 1898. Prep Rally is devoted to the SoCal high school sports experience, bringing you scores, stories and a behind-the-scenes look at what makes prep sports so popular. Could be nothing more than the A’s looking out for their interests, rather than entrusting that to a third party. The proposed ballpark site currently is occupied by the now-shuttered Tropicana hotel, with demolition targeted for October.
